The French Atlantic Coast delivers one of Europe’s most rewarding motorcycle routes. From La Rochelle’s historic harbour to Biarritz’s surf beaches, you’ll ride 450km through diverse landscapes where ocean spray mingles with pine forest scents.
This isn’t a motorway dash. It’s a 2-3 day journey designed for riders who want to experience France’s western coastline at its finest.
Total distance: 450km
Riding time: 7-8 hours pure riding
Recommended duration: 2-3 days
Toll booths: 12 (approximately €28-32)
Best season: May to October
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
The route combines coastal roads (D-roads) with strategic motorway sections to cover ground efficiently whilst maximising scenic riding.
Start your journey at La Rochelle’s iconic Vieux Port. The twin towers frame countless maritime adventures dating back centuries.
The ride: Take the D733 south following the coast. This section showcases the Charente-Maritime at its best.
Must-see stops:
Arrive in Royan by lunch. This resort town was rebuilt in the 1950s after WWII destruction, giving it distinctive modernist architecture.
Cross the Gironde estuary via the free ferry from Royan to Pointe de Grave. Ferries run every 30-45 minutes. A 20-minute crossing that saves 180km of riding back inland.
Ferry details: €18-22 for motorcycle and rider. Book ahead in July-August.
Once across, the D1215 hugs the Médoc coastline through endless pine forests. The scent alone makes this section memorable.
Key stops:
Arcachon makes an ideal overnight base. The Dune du Pilat lies 8km south—Europe’s tallest sand dune at 110m. Park securely and climb it for sunset.
The longest leg but packed with highlights. Mix of coastal roads and A63 motorway sections.
Morning route: D652 south through the Landes forest. 200km of arrow-straight road through pine plantations. Hypnotic but watch your speed—cameras are frequent.
Lunch target: Hossegor or Capbreton around midday.
Afternoon highlights:
This route includes 12 toll booths, mainly on A63 sections south of Bordeaux. Total cost: approximately €28-32 depending on exact route choices.
Each stop means:
French toll booths aren’t motorcycle-friendly. The payment terminals sit at car-window height. You’re stretching, balancing, hoping you don’t drop anything.
MOTOPASS eliminates this entirely. Your badge stays on your jacket. Ride through porte-badge Motopass télépéage lanes at up to 30km/h. No stops, no glove removal, no stress. Just uninterrupted riding.
Over 35,000 motorcyclists across Europe now ride with MOTOPASS attached to their jacket or tank bag. The French toll network reads it instantly.
Fuel: Stations are plentiful. Tank range of 200km+ is adequate. Prices increase slightly in tourist zones.
Accommodation: Book ahead for Arcachon and Biarritz in summer. Royan offers better value. Wild camping is prohibited but tolerated in designated forest areas.
Weather: Atlantic weather changes rapidly. Pack a waterproof layer even in summer. Wind can be strong on exposed coastal sections.
Traffic: July-August sees heavy traffic around resort towns. Ride weekdays if possible. Early morning departures beat the crowds.
Parking: Motorcycle parking is generally free and easy to find. In Biarritz, use the dedicated bike spaces near the beaches.
The Atlantic Coast offers distinct regional flavours:
Charente-Maritime (La Rochelle to Royan): Oysters, mouclade (mussels in cream), Cognac
Gironde (Arcachon): More oysters, canelés pastries, Bordeaux wines
Landes: Duck confit, Armagnac
Basque Country (Biarritz): Pintxos, Bayonne ham, Espelette pepper, gâteau basque
Budget €15-25 per person for quality lunch stops. Evening meals in resort towns: €25-40.
Add Île de Ré: From La Rochelle, the 3km toll bridge (€16 return) leads to this cycling paradise. Flat, scenic, worth a half-day.
Bordeaux detour: Insert a night in Bordeaux between stages 2 and 3. The city’s wine culture and riverside setting justify the 120km round trip.
Continue to San Sebastián: Biarritz sits just 50km from the Spanish border. Extend your journey into Basque Spain for pintxos heaven.
Inland return: Ride back via the Dordogne valley and Cognac region for completely different scenery.
May-June: Ideal. Warm weather, fewer tourists, accommodation availability, green landscapes.
July-August: Busy and expensive but guaranteed sun. Book everything ahead. Traffic heaviest.
September-October: Excellent choice. Still warm, quieter roads, autumn light photography, lower prices.
November-April: Possible but unpredictable Atlantic weather. Many coastal businesses close. Not recommended for this specific leisure route.
You’ve planned the perfect Atlantic Coast journey. You’ve checked your bike, mapped your stops, booked your accommodation.
